John Murphy
Born in the Bronx and raised in Upstate NY, John Murphy’s passion for plants has been lifelong. After graduating from SUNY Cobleskill with his degree in landscape design, he began a lifetime of working with plants. He established Murphy John’s Inc. in 1996 with the help of his wife, Maureen. He soon became involved with the local organizations while constructing and establishing the new business.
Along with running the business, John has been involved with many organizations and community groups such as:
–Ruritans where he served for 30 years as a zone governor for the upper eastern shore of Maryland serving 5 community groups
–Boy Scouts of America where he acted as the CoR for Troop 175
–Maryland Department of Agriculture serving as the Maryland Ag Commissioner serving the Nursery trade and State Soil Conversation Commission
–Maryland Green Industry Council (MaGIC) as Chairman where he reviews legislative bills and makes recommendations to the board and testifies in Chambers of Annapolis
–Maryland Nursery Landscape and Greenhouse Association (MNLGA) where he served as the President and a board member
-Maryland Greenhouse Growers Association (MGGA) as a past board member and treasurer
–USAid and ACDI/VOCA who sponsored work serving in the country of Kyrgyzstan instructing greenhouse management for farmers and educational institutions.
After retiring from these duties John currently assists local and state growers in networking and further interconnecting the agriculture industry community. During his spare time John enjoys gardening, hunting and spending time with family
Maureen “Mo” Murphy
When I was three my father gave me a carrot seed. I have been hooked on plants ever
since! While attending Cobleskill College in Upstate NY, I was fortunate to meet
and fall in love with a man who shares my passion. In 1996 we built a wholesale
greenhouse (remember the blizzard of ’96?) which we have expanded and still own and
operate today. We are blessed with a son who has joined in the operating of Murphy
John’s.
I still enjoy gardening after all these years.
Eamon Murphy
Having grown up in the greenhouse, Eamon brings both lifelong familiarity and a strong sense of responsibility to the business. He is committed to honoring the foundation his parents established while thoughtfully guiding the company into the future. With a hands-on approach and a focus on dependable results, he takes pride in seeing each project through and ensuring every detail is handled with care. Known for his outgoing and personable nature, Eamon enjoys building lasting relationships and works to make sure every customer leaves confident, well-supported, and fully equipped for success.
Geneva “Gem” Martiny
With an eye for detail and a love of learning, Gem helps bring the greenhouse into the digital space. After studying English and Communication at Frostburg State University, she found a meaningful way to apply her skills through her work with Murphy Johns. Today, she focuses on maintaining the website, supporting advertising efforts, and strengthening how the business connects with customers online, while continuing to grow into new projects and opportunities.
Millie Murphy
Though she has little to do with the day-to-day work of growing, our loyal and energetic black Labrador plays an important role in her own way. With a never-ending love for people and an always-wagging tail, she brings warmth and enthusiasm to the greenhouses, greeting visitors and team members alike. Her cheerful presence and steady companionship offer a bit of daily encouragement, reminding us to enjoy the work we do and the community we serve.
